How to Buy an Engagement Ring

We design engagement rings to stand the test of time – enduring the elements as they should – through all of life’s adventures.

This guide is here to help encapsulate what we stand for as you embark on this journey: uncompromised beauty and unique design details to reflect your true sensibilities: these rings are designed by a woman, for a woman.

Choose A Setting

To find the right engagement ring setting, reflect on what truly represents your lifestyle and sensibilities at their core. As you scan our expansive array of styles, think about your personal aesthetics and how your daily activities align – as they exist today and as you aspire to grow in the future.

From simple, subtle designs like classic solitaires to more intricately designed, art deco-inspired modern vintage, Sylvie has designed something for every woman that is true to herself.

Choose A diamond

When choosing a diamond for your unique engagement ring, it’s important to know the 4 Cs of diamonds – cut, color, clarity and carat weight. Check out our guide on the 4 Cs before you make the purchase.

The 4 C’s of Diamond Buying

  • Cut
  • Color
  • Clarity
  • Carat
The cut refers to the proportions and angles of a diamond. A "well-cut" diamond will internally reflect light from one mirror like facet to another and disperse and reflect it through the top of the stone (table). The more finely proportioned or cut the diamond, the more brilliance or fire is dispersed.
The majority of diamonds have some color in them, but diamond color is viewed based on the absence of color or natural color, based on the GIA grading system. The scale begins with the letter D, representing colorless, and continues with increasing presence of color to the letter Z, or light yellow or brown. Diamonds are color-graded by comparing them to stones of known color under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions.
Clarity is a component of diamond grading that indicates the absence of inclusions or blemishes. The GIA Clarity Scale contains 11 grades, with most diamonds falling into the VS (very slightly included) or SI (slightly included) categories. To determine clarity, GIA takes into account size, nature, position, color or relief, and quantity of clarity characteristics.
Carat is the unit of measurement used to describe the weight of a diamond, and often the most discernable quality in a diamond. A single carat equals one-fifth of a gram.

After you’ve chosen your ring, the proposal is the culmination of the creativity, passion and personal touch that has gone into the creation of your ring. It’s also the foundation of a life together – a moment that should shine as bright as your center stone and lives in your heart for eternity to mark the beginning of a new chapter together.
